Canadian rockers HELIX, best known for their single “Rock You,” from 1984s Walkin’ the Razor’s Edge, release their 12th full-legth studio album, Vagabond Bones.

In a brief e-mail, vocalist Brian Vollmer had time to answer some questions.

How’s the recording of the new album going?
Brian: The CD is out. It’s called Vagabond Bones.Three songs are on the www.planethelix.com homepage. One of them, Hungover But Still Hanging In, is a duet with Russ Graham of The Killer Dwarfs. All songs were written by Sean Kelly (Crash Kelly, presently playing guitar for Nelly Furtado) and myself. On four of the songs, Moe Berg is also a co-writer. The CD is distributed in Canada by Fontana/Universal and in the rest of the world by subsidiaries of Perris Records. You can also obtain the CD directly through the Planet Helix website. The CD features the return of the original 80’s lineup of Daryl Gray/Brent Doerner/Greg Hinz/and myself.

Any tours or single shows in the works?
Brian: We have four dates in the Canadian Maritimes in November — Fredericton/Moncton/St. John/Halifax, followed by a date the weekend we get home in Kitchener, Ontario. As for next year we’re already booked at the Mohegan Casino in Connecticut in April and at the Mussels Bed Soiree in Lewisporte, Newfoundland for next August. My western Canadian agent is putting something together with a reformed KICKAXE for next summer and I also have agent(s) looking for work for the band in the U.S. In Europe, it’s very difficult to get work because of the expensive nature of flights to get there in the first place. Our best bet on that front is to get on the festivals. In our case, the most obvious one would be Sweden Rock. We have very good distribution in that country through Tom Mather’s (Perris Records) distributer, so couple that with the fact the band once had a Number One album there, and I think the chances are good we could come over. If that were to happen, I believe Tom would try to get more dates for us. We’ll see how it unfolds. As for a single on the CD, one of the tunes that really seems to be getting attention since the CD has been released has been Monday Morning Meltdown. There are other ones as well, especially The Best Mistake I Never Made and Make ‘Em Dance.

How’s the reunited Helix lineup going so far?
Brian: It’s going great. We’re enjoying it immensely. As Brent says, “I hope they have beer in hell!”

How do you think you did on your movie debut in the Trailer Park Boys’ “Countdown To Liquor Day”?
Brian: For the 1.5 seconds I was in it, I was awesome. Brando is rolling in his grave.

What do you have planned next for Planet Helix?
Brian: Next year will be spent working Vagabond Bones, playing, writing with Sean & Moe again, and possibly filming a live accoustic DVD and CD.

Peaceout,
Brian Vollmer
