BBC bosses were forced into a humiliating apology after RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE fired off a volley of expletives during Radio Five Live’s Breakfast Show today.

The band, who are battling X Factor winner Joe McElderry for the coveted Christmas #1, were interviewed and performed on the station’s Breakfast Show, presented by Nicky Campbell and Shelagh Fogarty, in a live link-up from Los Angeles, California.

They were interviewed before beginning to sing the song just before nine o’clock this morning. As the song “Killing In The Name”, was coming to it’s finale, singer Zack de la Rocha started shouting: ‘F*** You! I won’t do what you tell me.’

He repeated the phrase four more times before the show’s producers finally pulled the plug on the performance as an exasperated Fogarty said: ‘Get rid of it.’

After regaining her composure somewhat, Ms. Fogarty explained: ‘We needed to get rid of it because that suddenly turned into something we were not expecting especially as we asked them not to do it.

‘So buy Joe’s record instead,’ she added.

A spokesman afterwards said: ‘5 live breakfast featured a live broadcast of the song Killing in the Name by Rage Against the Machine. We had spoken to the band repeatedly beforehand and they had agreed not to swear.

McElderry sold more than 100,000 copies of his single yesterday, taking his tally to more than 210,000. More than 78,000 downloads were added to RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE’s sales total on the same day, taking them to more than 253,000 copies.
