DJ how to - Questions & Answers 2 Years, 6 Months ago
Hi Potential DJ's with questions!
I just got another email with questions so I decided to start answering them here. If you have questions feel free to post them here for an answer. Many of our DJ's are eager to assist you!
Q: I've been listening to BrainGell Radio for quite a few years now and wanted to express my interest in become a DJ. I saw that you hold auditions on Wed. between 7-9PM PST but I had some questions about the software, schedules, etc.
A: We do hold auditions live on air occasionally. We also allow potential DJ's to do a private audition as their schedule allows instead of the 7-9PM PST time. We can accommodate your time for us to hear you and see if you have what it takes.
Q: I understand and have downloaded/installed/configured all plug-ins required, but my problem is with Shoutcast Source- How do I close out of it after configuring it? There is no exit or "X" option?
A: The SHOUTcast source will be displayed anytime you have winamp running. Once you close it you have lost the ability to control your broadcast. To close the SHOUTcast source you have to disable it in your winamp properties. This can be a bad idea to change this all the time so we suggest you use another program to listen to the broadcast and only open your copy of winamp with SHOUTcast DSP when you are going to broadcast.
Q: What should MP3 filenames or ID3 tags include or be configured to?
A: I find there are many ways to do this and someone will always have another way to show you. I use the following.
For filenames: track# - Artist - Title.mp3
For Tags I try to get as much of the following: Artist, Album, Title, Track#, Genre, Year & Album Art using a tool like MusicMatch SuperTagging.
There are a bunch of tools for tagging and organizing music. Ask other DJ's from Braingell what they use in the forums and I am sure you will get tons of info.
Q: How much time should we prepare for an audition or what are the details of the audition?
A: You should be totally comfortable with the Winamp and SHOUTcast source controls. At a minimum; connecting and disconnecting with the test server, turning on and off your mic to talk, stopping and starting music, and getting music into your playlist.
Q: How much music would you recommend as a min.?
A: I would say 500 to 2000 songs is a basic start. You can start purchasing music as you learn what the people are requesting. My connection is very fast and I have purchased MP3's that people have requested and then played them during my broadcast. I have a library of 5000+ songs that are Braingell ready.
Q: What do think is the most important thing to be a successful Braingell Radio DJ?
A: Get involved with Braingell Radio community! Put time in Braingell chat and learn who everyone is. Get to know the Braingell DJ's, Moderators, Writers, Contributors and Listeners. Become a member of the BGR community on our forums at a minimum. We would like the potential DJ's writing articles and posting related news.
