Wow...that's an awesome topic. The ten bands that grace your CD player the most? That's still pretty hard.
If I had to think about it...
1. As I Lay Dying (got the new album from a friend, liked what I heard, and then I just had to run out and get Shadows Are Security for "Confined". These guys are so skilled and crafty with the tempo-changes and melodic structure, you might almost forget it's metal. I listen to them a lot, trying to refine my guitar and bass skills for the band I'm working with. We do similar music, and their vocalist just keeps on surprising me as to what the human voice can do. Definitely, one of today's top draws)
2. Lamb of God (need I say more? Probably the most angst driven metal out there, right now. I saw them at OZZfest, and knew that I had to have their CD, or see them again, and again. "Redneck" is my hype-up song. Anytime before a mission, every morning before PT, I throw a little Lamb on, and it's better than crack, my friends. If the Coors Ampitheater wasn't such a drag of a venue, I would probably still be wearing scars from the Lamb pit...so sad there were all those chairs. If you've never heard 'em, or don't own their CD...GO FUCKING GET IT)
3. Ozzy Osbourne (mostly Black Rain, a lot because of the title track that speaks out about the deployments of American troops, or just troops in general. There's a lot of truth in that album. I'm proud to serve, and proud to fight...but, I fight for my reasons, and my values...not what the government tells me I'm fighting for)
4. Audioslave (simply put, can't get enough of Chris Cornell's new groove. I've always loved Tom Morello, and now with a vocalist to harmonize with, he's golden)
5. Pantera (of course, the cowboys from hell...if you go a week without Pantera...you're gay)
6. Metallica (gets me all warm inside listening to "Motorbreath" and "Master of Puppets". Drives the wife crazy, but we all have to make sacrifices. haha)
7. Bullet For My Valentine (can't explain it, but something about them makes me want to beat the shit out of an emo kid)
8. Godsmack (someone once told me that all Godsmack albums sound the same. I thought I'd slap him for not teaching his ears to listen, but I figured I'd let the pit we were in do all the talking)
9. DevilDoll (ok...call me crazy, gay, retarded, whatever you want. I love 20's-40's era swing and jive, plus the fact that the woman has the most incredible voice. She gives Amy, Cristina, and the rest a run for their money. If she'd front a metal band...the music industry would explode and ejaculate simultaneously)
10. All That Remains (saw these guys in Denver about a month and a half ago with As I Lay Dying, and the pit was so hard, the crowd was so vicious, and the music so in my face that I had to own something of theirs. I knew of them because of "This Darkened Heart" and "This Calling", which I dedicated to my now-wife while I was away training in the desert, but I never expected them to be so powerful live. If you get the chance, check 'em out)
So, um, yeah...that's about it...
Keep it metal.
