Necrophagist : Jaxx Nightclub - Washington, D.C.
www.braingell.com --

If you are a member of the death metal crowd and you are in search of something completely original, you should seriously consider checking this band out.

Necrophagist is a band I had heard a ton of good things about and was looking forward to seeing them as the headliner on the Summer Slaughter tour a few weeks ago, but when the show came about the band couldn't get into the country due to a visa issue. Luckily, they decided to hit Jaxx after the fact and give their fans what they wanted.

The members of the band were the most "normal" looking death metallers I have ever seen. They didn't look metal at all. You would never see these dudes at the mall and think they looked like musicians. I emphasize "musicians" because this band isn't one of those three chord, 4/4 time signature bands. They had mad skills. The first person I noticed was the bass player who was in a 6 string fretboard frenzy. The bass was treated more like a piano than an axe as he played tons of stuff dual handed, hammering the fingers of both hands wildly over the frets. The drummer was simply shocking to watch. He had to have been a marching band geek before he was in this band because while he was slamming out lightning beats he was flipping and twirling his sticks like I have never seen done. His kick drums sounded incredible and he required no triggers. Just to give you an idea of how incredible this guy was, the band gave him a 7 minute drum solo that was out of control. Every single person in the crowd was flipping out and once it ended the crowd erupted. Good lord it was badass. The singer of the band had his voice dialed into "growl" for 100% of the music, so I don't have a clue what he might have been saying, but he was also playing guitar alongside another guitarist. These two guys were in full shred mode on every song. They really gave me the feeling of a death metal version of the band Cacophony. The fans didn't mosh to this music like I thought they would. Most of them stood there with mouths agape, while other people on the floor twiddled their fingers in the air, obviously knowing ever 64th note that rang from the speakers. A good number of the dudes made me think back to the Yngwie days, when all the boys went to the show to air guitar for their girlfriends. To watch the "people" on stage was pretty boring because none of the members moved around, and I mean not even a bit. They just stood there and did their thing, but to watch what they were doing was truly amazing. It had been since around the early 90s that I went to see a band and spend the whole show just watching their fingers. I really enjoyed those math metal days and I am glad to see that the artform is not only alive, but getting heavier. I also loved the music. Math is fun! I rate Necrophagist as a 9 out of 10. If they could just act excited to be on stage, they would earn the perfect score.

In my next report I hope to give you the scoop on the Testament show on 7/15 ! Stay tuned.
