Exodus/Goatwhore: Jaxx Nightclub - Washington, D.C
www.braingell.com --

It's been a while since anything the BGR crowd would get pumped up for, but after a month of waiting for a kick ass show to come around, I got to go check out one of my all time favorite bands, Exodus, and got to see my Goatwhore buddies for the billionth time in the last year.

Of course this is the part where you would read all about the awesomeness that is Goatwhore, but I have seen em so many times, if you want to know what their show is all about you are just gonna have to troll thru the old articles to find what you are looking for. Long story short, Goatwhore kicks total ass. Period.

Let's move on to Exodus, eh? If you don't know who Exodus is, you most likely aren't really a metal person and probably have no business reading this so if that is the case just go ahead and slide your mouse pointer up to that little "X" in the upper right hand corner of your screen and give it a click.

When the band opened up their set it was instantly obvious what band you were about to see. The guitar tone was no one else but Exodus. I swear that the same tone you remember from your 80's thrash days is exactly what screams out of their amps today. The V wielding, tremolo wizardry of the guitar duo and their simply amazing harmonies were just so damn cool.

The drummer was a lefty (which I don't ever remember seeing in a metal band), who surrounded himself with one hell of a wall of drums and cymbals. He also had a huge amount of monitors stacked next to his head, which leads me to believe that he is probably deaf. Deaf as he may be, he was probably one of the most in time drummers I have seen before. He was mechanical, exact, and never missed his targets.

The most eye-opening thing of the night for me was probably the singer. I did not expect a bald, round, hardcore looking dude to come bounding out on the stage. While he looks like a NYHC kinda guy he sure didn't sound like it. He sang his ass off. It was pretty wild to hear this dude sound exactly like all their old stuff. He pretty much mimicked whatever era of the band he was supposed to emulate. But as you know if you spend any time in the Stew, I think the new Exodus stuff is some of the best they have ever done and he exploded on all of that stuff too. The singer was also responsible for the funniest moment of the night when he asked, "How the fuck you doin West Virginia!?"... Uhm dude. We're in Virginia. So after someone corrected him every once and a while thru the night he kept saying he was sorry... Awww... Such a softie. The dude was cool to the fans too. He would mash the mic into their faces and let them sing whole lines and not just a scream or a yelp.

The band played lots of new shit, but also managed to work in stuff from all of their collection. The pit was small and "bumpy" most of the time, but would get pretty good and would sometimes circle when one of the bands anthems would get played. Looking around the club it sure seemed like there were a lot of kids who couldn't have been old enough to grow up with the old shit. That was kinda cool because it was apparent that Exodus has stayed good and is still putting out quality shit that both old and new can dig. The band announced that the show was sold-out, but seeing some of the true sell-outs at Jaxx this year, I would have to guess that they were about 100 heads short. So there we have it. Exodus did good. I'm happy to have seen em. 8 out of 10

In my next report I hope to give you the scoop on the Ill Nino show on 2/22 ! Stay tuned.

Go to the BGR gallery (CLICK HERE) and check out my pics from last night's the show.

I'm jealous. It doesn't look like Exodus is coming around here any time soon. I saw Goatwhore last year and they were great.

Ziggy, they are back at the Conservatory February 28, if you want to catch them.
