Music Hitting Your Soul
www.braingell.com --

You all know I love all music. I really love Indie and unsigned bands. Recently I have been getting to know bands from every background by doing interviews for my blog. They come from Classic Rock to Southern Cajun. A rather interesting bunch, if I must say so. A lot I call friends.

As we talk by phone or email, or just MySpace messaging, I am watching some small steps to huge breakthroughs. One band DarkNote a Heavy Metal Thrash Band was played on Unsigned here just the other night. They hail from Iceland, and have such a unique sound I can not explain it. When they found out, they sent me an email. They where flying high up in the air. They wanted me to thank Crazy Ivan and BrainGell. They just could not believe it. They now believe that what they are doing is not in vein.

Some of the other groups I deal with daily are just as amazing. One is Blue Merlot, A Louisiana Bred Cajun band. They found out last night they where nominated for a Grammy in their category. To be there when they got the news, and be part of their excitement, is amazing. No matter what kind of music you like, you have to admit, it’s exciting seeing bands you know going places.

I have another friend Brian Mackey that has a song on a cable TV show, and his life is turning into a whirlwind. A friend Manda Who happens to live near me who am recording her first label studio album.

I also know other bands that have been doing it for years. Very talented artist, and for one reason or other, just have not gotten their lucky break. Because just like acting it is 30% talent 20% who you know and 50% luck.

I know as music fans in general you want to see your favorite bands make it, in small steps and big. That is what it is all about. I do not think it matters that I hear any fucking kind of music and enjoy it and get moved, that is not the point. The point is that music thrives. Music has always been the medium that holds the majority of people’s hearts and memories. Music is powerful, whether a person listens to Heavy Metal or Classical. For many, we express ourselves through our music. We relive our past through music; we bond with others through our taste in music. Music is a universal language.

I can not sing, but some of my earliest memories are of sitting in a park, I guess around 1974 (you do the math) and singing horribly off key, almost the entire Beatles collection to my mother. I can still come up with lyrics to songs heard long ago out of nowhere. I write them to friends, when I see fit. Music is ingrained in so many of us. No matter what we listen to. There is no right or wrong genre, no better or worse. You can like all or just one style. Music is made to move your soul deep inside, no matter what you listen to. I believe that why music writers write, and DJ’s are DJ’s they love music and want to be near it. It is just simple.

For those of us that have decided to take this journey, it is even more exciting when you may happen to know some musicans. You are watching their careers take off right in front of your eyes. Watching them fulfill dreams. Without trashing each others taste, nor style. For the love of what we do. We are creative and artist too. I have realized as well recently that if you decide to work along musicans or within music to any capacity, you have to love it, because while it’s exhilarating, it is crazy, it is draining, and sometimes thankless. So those of us in the background, we do it out of love, and the excitement….cause baby, it sure is not the money. At least not yet, but I know someday it will happen.
