The phones are busy at the University of Kansas as students and parents worried about a rumor sweeping across the campus.
It all started a couple of weeks ago when someone shot out some windows at a dorm while students were on fall break. Then, fast forward to this week and some graffiti was spotted with Tuesday's date written right underneath it. The rumor combined the two claiming another shooting was coming, and Tuesday was the day it would happen. It all really took off when someone sent an e-mail to a class of 400 students. The rumor spread so fast that if someone didn't get the e-mail, they knew someone who did. Police, professors and KU personnel were bombarded with phone calls and questions including from parents who were out of state or across the country. Police said it turned out the shot out windows and graffiti have no connection. The graffiti is the symbols for a band, and the date is when you can buy their new CD. KU sent an e-mail to all faculty, staff and students to let them know there is nothing to worry about. KU officials said next time when students hear something, they should call the local police to find out what the real story is. It's not clear yet how many students actually skipped class and avoided campus on Tuesday because of the rumor. But, after alerting everyone that there's nothing to worry about, KU officials hope it will be business as usual on Wednesday.
