Manager: METALLICA Wanted Sales-Based Royalties Before Licensing Music To Video Games

According to The Wall Street Journal, METALLICA licensed two of its best known songs — "One" and "Enter Sandman" — for use in the Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock and Rock Band video games, respectively. Marc Reiter, who works for Q Prime, the firm that manages METALLICA, says the band was previously approached to license its music to games, including Guitar Hero, but never agreed because makers only offered flat fees, instead of royalties based on sales.
With Rock Band and Guitar Hero III, the game makers finally agreed to grant royalties. Reiter says METALLICA is happy about the decision since a couple of them play Guitar Hero, as do their families and fans. "We felt we were remiss in not being in there," he says.

If the makers of the game didn't like the deal they don't have to use their songs. Why not negotiage a deal like that? They could of always said no.
Keep bashing though - it's not like what you say matters outside of this website. Metallica will still make music, be happy and as it also happens...be rich. Good on them. It makes me happy that you dumb fucks here get so annoyed by this sort of thing. Kinda rounds the day out nicely for me.

If my band was in the same situition as Metallica, I would do the same. I dont know about the rest of the country but gas prices in California, have gone up in the past year. So they need every penny to they can get to fill up the gas tank.

RELAX people, it's the music BUSINESS. If I write a couple of great songs, what, am I supposed to just give them away? While I think they are moreons for leading the fight against ripping music from the net, I cannot blame them for demanding a payday from their music. And maybe some good will come of this....If Metallica plays guitar hero, perhaps they will re-learn how to play full on metal!

It seems are lot of Metallica's decisions are pushed by their management(Q-Prime). Some kind of monster definately shows cliff burnstein pushing things forward that Metallica clearly dont wanna do(The radio promo they had to do). Im not saying Metallica didnt want more money for this, but it just seems q-prime push for them to squeeze as much out as they can. Im a big Metallica fan, and although this is pretty petty, I like to just to focus on their music and their new album. Everyone on here is complaining about this....who cares!?

This doesn't surprise me at all. They will squeeze every last cent that they can. They think they are the greatest metal band of all time or something. I don't even know why so many people go to their shows. Ever since James started to TRY & sing, it has been down hill ever since. Go back to growling & barking James, & maybe-MAYBE, I'll buy your next record...
I grew up listening to Metallica. I stole their first cassette recording Kill Em All import, and was totally blew away. They promised us REAL fans that they would never sell out, like alot of other band were, & lied.
This is something I will never forget...

How does this make them look bad? It's their fucking music. Where the hell did this idea of musician's should work for free come from? Do they have millions? Yes...But that doesn't mean they should do everything for free now.
Also, "selling out" doing what's safe, what everyone expects, what you've already done in the past simply b'c it was successful for you. Selling out is not taking any chances. These guys have gone off the deep end before and it's been almost 2 decades since they put out any material I like, but the fact that this game company is now willing to come to the table with a royalties-based offer only confirms that their previous ones were low-ball offers, and Metallica called their bluff. Should they be condemned for that? Why do the record companies get a bad rap for screwing over bands in their contracts but the gaming companies get a pass when they're basically doing the same thing? Gaming is so popular right now and gaming companies are making more money than god. And this franchise is one of their biggest sellers. All Metallica did here was get the game company to show their hand. All of the other bands who rolled over for their flat fee are now going to see what they missed out on, and you can bet that any bands in the furure who get offers to be on Guitar Hero are going to also want royalties-based deals (maybe not as much if they're not as big of a band), thanks to the precedent that Metallica set. Call it greed, but it's simply smart negotiating in a free market.
