Tonight was a night when I had no idea what to expect. Prong has long been a band that represents some pretty popular anthems from back in the day. Now from what I remembered back then, they weren't a band who toured like mad, so I didn't have a clue what to expect. Would they be good live or are the recorded versions of their classics as good as they get?
I have to tell you, for as curious as I was to see how they were as a live band, I must have been more curious than the local metal scene. Myself and the Jaxx staff were expecting a killer crowd, but at max there could have only been 150 people in the club. That kind of bummed me out because as "important" as some of Prong's songs are in metal, I would have likes to see the band get their props.
It was instantly apparent how empty the stage looked when the three piece band came out. At this point I was hoping they were very lively, because the void on the stage really needed to be filled. To the singer/guitarist's dismay the floor in front of the stage was about as empty as it was around him. Thankfully, by the time they got to the third song the crowd decided to loosely fill out in front of the stage. I suspect that lots of the people in the club weren't even aware that Prong was on. Good lord were there a crapload of seriously drunk people at this gig.
So as the music was kicking off I couldn't help but think, "Man, I remember when Prong was a seriously heavy band.". To hear Prong now really clued me in to how much heavier the metal of today is. BUT! When the band played some of their newer material, I will admit that it was harder and faster than it ever was back in the day. When you heard the singer, you knew it was Prong. When you heard the riffs, you knew it was Prong. They really did go a great job of sounding like you are used to hearing them. It seemed like they were one of those bands who you thought sounded perfect IF you knew the songs. To take someone that didn't know the songs would have probably resulted in that person saying, "They were alright I guess...".
Overall they weren't an incredibly energetic band, but they did play their tunes spot-on. Im glad I finally got to see them. The funny part was that when I entered Jaxx, I had no idea what to expect. When I left Prong was exactly as I would expected they would be... Weird, huh? 7 out of 10.
