Rock Band vs. Guitar Hero Compatibility : What game is right for you?

Rock Band and Guitar Hero III are both some completely awesome music games and they offer some great choices for gamers but there is some serious confusion about the guitar controllers out there. There was a Wikipedia article that had an easy to understand chart. Unfortunately the pencil necked Uber Geek cabal that runs Wikipedia has deemed it important to delete it. Luckily there is a Google Cache of the article with an easy to understand chart. Since the Wikipedia article is under a GNU License I might post it here if this article does not clear up the confusion.

Even more Rocking at GHII 360

Originally the first semi popular guitar type game was GuitarFreaks by Konami. It was an arcade game that also came out on the PS2 in Japan and Korea but it never officially came out in the states. In the movie Lost in Translation you can see someone playing the arcade game.

Then Harmonix teamed up with accessory maker Red Octane to make Guitar Hero for PS2, Guitar Hero 2 PS2 and Xbox 360 and Guitar Hero Encore Rocks the 80s for PS2. Then they spit up and Harmonix developed Rock Band with EA/MTV for Xbox 360 and PS3. Then Activision and Red Octane went on to develop Guitar Hero 3 for PS2, PS3, PC, Wii and Xbox 360.

First the Games and their respected hardware.

Platform : Playstation 2

Game: Guitar Hero
Guitar : Wired SG Gibson (Black)
Guitar compatible with : GH 1, GH 2 and GH 3 on PS2 only.

Guitar compatible with : GH 1, GH 2 and GH 3 on PS2 only.
Notable Features: An awesome follow up with a great track list, Dual Mode, Guitar Hero 1 and 2 for PS2 are available in a double pack without the guitars.

Game: Guitar Hero Encore : Rocks the 80s.

Notable Features: Totally Rad Track List that is currently only on the PS2. I really hope that they eventually port it to the Xbox 360.

Game: Guitar Hero III
Guitar : Wired SG Gibson (Red)
Guitar compatible with : GH 1, GH 2 and GH 3 on PS2 only.
Notable Features: Still and awesome game on the PS2, Dual Mode, Not Online, Target is selling a double pack of two SG Gibson guitars with a copy of GH3.

A wireless version of the Guitar Hero SG Gibson for the PS2 is sold separately. Also the PS2 versions of the controllers do NOT work with the Playstation 3.

Notable Features: An awesome HD version with additional songs than the PS2 version. Supports downloaded additional tracks including many songs from the original Guitar Hero. The guitar works with Rock Band on the Xbox 360 but there is no sound effect filters since there is no switch for them.

The wired X-Plorer controller is also sold separately without the game.

Game: Guitar Hero III
Guitar : Wireless Les Paul
Guitar compatible with : GH 2, GH 3 and Rock Band on Xbox 360
Notable Features: An awesome game with an awesome track list. Has the best feeling wireless guitar that is compatible with the most games. This is the one version that I recommend the most. The guitar works with Rock Band on the Xbox 360 but there is no sound effect filters since there is no switch for them. However I love the feel of this controller and it's my favorite Guitar controller.

Notable Features: An awesome game that is now on PC.

So what game is right for you? In a perfect world I would recommend going with the Xbox 360 version of the game since it has three guitar games that it can run with out any major compatibility issues if you get a Guitar Hero guitar.

All are awesome games and I can't wait to see more Guitar Hero and Rock Band in the form of downloaded songs or sequels.

Guitar Hero 3 is going to be awesome on the Nintendo Wii and I see a lot of overlap for the Wii audience and Guitar Hero.

Rock Band is sort of for more experience music gamers with a PS3 or xbox 360s and are into cooperative online gameplay. I also think that Rock Band has a better approach to Downloaded Content and that the effect of playing with others doing multiple instruments is a much greater sum than just playing a single instrument.

Probably the only thing that can create more performance anxiety than public speaking is public singing with an audience. So I understand why the singing is a much more intimate performance than playing the instruments. But it's all about roll playing and laying it out for all to see. However at this point everyone is about the same level of experience and no one has ever told me that I sucked after singing a song. However I did get kicked out of a band for dissing Emo.

While I am on the topic of music games. Where is the rap music games? Where is Rap Hero or Rap Band?

Rap and Hip Hop has been super popular for a couple decades now and where is the video game music love? I mean the closest that we have had to rap music game is Parappa the Rappa 1 and 2. Rap stars have been in wrestling games, pimping rides, racing games, crime action games, fighting games but not actually rapping games. I've played Epic and Sabotage in Rock Band and that seems to work awesome So where us the plastic wheels of Steel USB controller?

Update: There was a PS2 game called Get On Da Mic but it looks like the developers did a really bad job.

Sleater-Kinney's guitarist tests out Rock Band. As a guy with a deeper voice when ever I have to sing something that is intended for a female vocalist I'll either try to sing it like a crooner or with a British accent. I have yet to hear a female singer on Xbox Live. I can't wait because there is something awesome about girl rockers belting out traditionally macho songs like Paranoid or Enter Sandman. Both Rock Band and Guitar Hero should be inviting to female gamers as well as gamers of all ages.

Your right. I have not seen those movies in a while now and I was looking for a good way to end the article.

I hope that some reader can clarify if you can use the Rock Band Xbox guitar on Guitar Hero 3

Historically adjusted for inflation the Xbox 360 is not much more than videogame systems of previous generations of hardware. I see a lot of kids in my local big city of Seattle spending a lot of money on Cell phones and name brand clothes. But if you're asking about a "Rap Hero" game statistically speaking white suburban kids buy a lot of rap albums. It's a huge market that crosses racial barriers all over the world. There has been a country version of Karaoke Revolution and there is plenty of pop songs on Sony's Singstar series.

"the inner city youths" are not the only people buying Rap CDs. I know a heck of a lot of suburban kids that listen to rap.

"Where is the rap music games?"

Better question: where is your understanding of the English language? And why does this page look like one continuous chunk of text? Why aren't text elements properly styled?

#70655

Posted by unregistered user at 11/28/07 8:38 p.m.

Because rap has no deep sense of art, how can you make a game solely on the music alone?

#70656

Posted by unregistered user at 11/28/07 8:44 p.m.

There was a rap game called "Get on Da Mic" for PS2 and it was horrible.

I tried using the Rock Band controller on GH3 and no dice. I was able to navigate the menus but once i got into actual gameplay it said the green button was being held down when i was pressing nothing. When I did push down the green button the orange fret lit up on screen. Maybe eventually they will release a patch but i doubt it.

both guitar hero 3 and rock band are definately great games. i own both for the xbox 360.

the only compatibility problem i have run into is that the rock band guitar is read as a controller on guitar hero 3 so it doesnt work the same (the green button is read as the orange and there is no left or right triggers/bumpers).

i, personally, didnt have any problem with this because i have bought all three full versions (GH2, GH3, RB) so i have all three guitars, but in a situation that money is tight, it would be a bit frustrating to still only have one guitar for GH3. Luckily, as stated before guitar hero controllers translate beautifully to rock band.

also, just as a tip, if your hub is damaged or lost, it is still possible to play with 4 people by hooking up the drums (wired), guitar (wired), GH3 controller (wireless), and a regular 360 controller with a headset for the microphone.

#70664

Posted by unregistered user at 11/28/07 9:00 p.m.

The rock band guitar for 360 does NOT work on GH3. The game says that an incompatible controller has been detected. Kinda sucks because I was looking toward to playing GH3 in two player mode. Oh well, I'll just keep playing rock band...

Actually there are quite a few online Wii games now, and growing fast... Medal of Honor is a VERY notable one! Incredibly easy to pick up, and no "Heros" to really contend with, very balanced and excruciatingly fun!

There actually was a game released about the same time as Guitar Hero II where you use a turn-table instead of a guitar, and mix dance and hip-hop songs. Can't remember what it was called, though.

#70701

Posted by unregistered user at 11/29/07 12:27 a.m.

I don't know if someone mentioned this, but you left out (or so I think) that the GH3 for ps2 only comes with the wired guitars at ghetto wal-mart and target, Gamestop packages all of theirs with a Wireless guitar the same as the others. I have no idea why Walmart got that deal, the Wireless is much better.

#70724

You do know Rock Band is coming out for PS2 right?

#70739

Posted by unregistered user at 11/29/07 7:40 a.m.

For a rap music game, what controllers would be used? A mic, drums(maybe), and a fake LP record player for wannabe DJs. The problem with making a rap music game is that rap music is not melodic; it focuses on beats and rythyms with vocals that are rythmic as well. The only melodic parts of most rap music are created electronically without any traditional instruments. In other words, if you could play this rap game, you could probably create rap music without it. There's no money to be made.

The GHIII info for PS2 is inaccurate. The real bundle features a black wireless Kramer. The cherry red SG comes with bundles from Walmart.

I found the game that #70700 was talking about, its called Beatmania. www.amazon.co.uk/Konami-Beatmania-Includ

Its got the turn-table and everything, but it doesn't look like the sales were that good.

Guitar Hero sounds OK and it's fun for playing alone, but if you're going to all the trouble of getting friends together to play Rock Band, why not just start a band and have some REAL fun!

#70772

Posted by 8bitjoystick at 11/29/07 9:15 a.m.

I will update the bit about some bundles of Guitar Hero 3 for the PS2 coming with the wireless Kramer and Yeah I do know that they are making a PS2 version of Rock band but it is going to be interesting to see if the PS2 can pull it off.

Both games are a joke!

As a correction to the article. I have GH3 for PS3 and the GH2 wired controller for PS2 DOES work on the PS3, Although you need to get a USB adaptor for PS2 controllers. The problems I had were that the fret buttons do not light up on screen when pressed, but work when you strum, and the star power activates automatically when you build up enough. here is the adapter. Can't seem to find the manufacturer website.

I know the PS2 version is coming out but it will not be online and it was not done by Harmonix. I doubt that the graphics will be anywhere near as clean and complex as the 360/PS3 versions.

Also I know that there are adapters to use the PS2 guitars on the PS3 but there were major problems with them so I didn't bring them up.

#78781

Yes, you can sing at the same time by using a headset. Or at least attempt to sing - I couldn't get 1/2 way through a song while singing and drumming.

Guitar Hero III is now available for Intel Macs. The GH2 guitar for the Xbox 360 works fine with it.

Be warned that it stutters on the Mac except at the lowest settings and low resolution. This is even true of the 8-core Mac Pro with the best GPU. You are better off with an Xbox 360 or PS3 version if you have those consoles.

Any advice for me? Money is tight and i really want Rockband NOW! i can't wait until March and the scalpers are getting too much for the early releases.

I have a PS2 and an upgrade is no where in sight for me. I am wondering if I buy the Rock band game only, will my Guitar Hero controllers work? Have you seen just the drum set on Ebay? Think that would work and then i hear the mic on Singstar will also work with Rockband.

This way it would be more affordable and i could get it now. Does anyone know for sure, are they all compatible with PS2? Think this would work?

Thanks!

Dude, there is a rock band for PS2, it comes with the wireless Fender Stratocaster,USB hub, Drum set, and mic. It is pretty awesome and fun, you should test it out

#79678

Also - for those of you who want to have the GH3 experience wirelessly on your PC - buy the XBOX 360 version (comes with a wireless guitar) and a wireless gaming receiver, which plugs into your PC's USB port and allows you to use ANY WIRELESS XBOX peripheral. And then legally purchase the PC version of GH3 (game only). You should not download it off a p2p network. Nor should you download a crack that allows you to play it without the CD. That is copyright infringment, which is apprently illegal. And that would be wrong. And don't use drugs.

Uh rock band ps3 controllers are wired for ps3 as well as 360 though they sell optional wireless ones with dongles (no dongle for 360). Also although the 360 gh3 controllers are fully wireless as well as the wii the ps3 needs a dongle due to Bluetooth problems.

Is there a patch online that we can download to make the PS3 Guitar from Guitar HeroIII compatible with the PS3 Rock Band? Thanks.

#83140

Posted by unregistered user at 1/8/08 10:28 a.m.

Does anyone know about inter-system compatibility? Are all the mics USB mics, and so they will all work on whichever system? I have the 360 set and they are all USB ports. The drums and guitar have xbox 360 Home buttons and such so would they work on a PS3? Would PS3 drums work on a 360? I know the wiimote plugs into the guitar, so the wii is obviously out of the equation.

#83438

Posted by 8bitjoystick at 1/8/08 11:33 p.m.

The USB Mics are the only cross platform part of Rockband.

In the Wii version of GuitarHero III the Wiimote actually snaps into the face of the guitar in the big Wiimote shaped hole.

You are not going to get the PS3 guitars to work on the 360 and vice versa.

In response to 70700 and 70744, I used to have a copy of Beatmania, but I didn't like it very much. No doubt the sales would have been better without Guitar Hero in the mix as a competing genre game, but regardless, Beatmania was ridiculously difficult to play. Unlike DDR, where you can work your way up from 1-foot beginner songs fairly easily, I was still having trouble with 3/10 difficulty songs. In Guitar Hero, no matter if you're late or early on a note, the program still plays it in time, and simply cuts out if you make a mistake. With Beatmania, however, you are in control of the timing of the notes, similar to a synthesizer or MIDI controller. So, the only thing you have to hang on to in terms of the beat is the accompanying track. This sounds simple enough, but since you are playing pretty much every instrument track in every song at some point or another, it can get very confusing and frustrating.

#88366

Posted by unregistered user at 1/21/08 7:57 a.m.

So let me get this straight...I own a PS3 and have Rock Band w/ instruments and GH3. If, at any time, I want to play with two guitars on either Rock Band or GH3, I will need to own a total of FOUR guitars, JUST SO I CAN PLAY WITH TWO AT THE SAME TIME? Of course, even if I did want to buy TWO MORE GUITARS, Rock Band doesn't even have individual instruments available yet. Way to screw the consumer over yet again.

#90040

I think one of the coolest things about Rock Band and music in video games is that there are so many more people interested in taking the leap to playing real instruments to experiment. While I was at NAMM last week, I saw a new drum company launching this spring called Dixon Drums and they're making high quality, aggresive drum sets on the cheap. If you ever wanted to be a drummer, nows a good time to make the leap. Check them out @ www.myspace.com/dixondrumsd

Activision sucks. They will not allow Sony to release the patch so that there guitar and rock band can be compatible. Activision, Get over it...Everyone already owns your Guitar Hero(s) and they just don't want to have 4 plastic guitars setting around in the living rooms.

I can't believe the guitars for PS3 GH3 and Rock Band aren't compatible (just found that out tonight with much disappointment for the kids). And there's a patch that won't be released?!!! Ridiculous. I'd actually be OK with paying a fee to get the patch, just to avoid the aforementioned 4 plastic guitar controllers in our small living room.

Actually the Rockband seperately packaged USB Microphone lists support for Rockband on the PS3,PS2,Xbox 360 AND Wii. So who knows they are probably working on the Wii version right now, I mean if they could get the game running on the PS2 than the Wii could handle it.

I already have three guitars, thanks to the fact that you can't use a GHIII guitar with GHI and GHII on the PS3, so I got the wired, the wireless, and the Rock Band guitar. And I can't use any of them at the same time. Awesome.

U play the guitar, and u use the end of the guitar to hit the drum, while ur wearing the mic on the headset, and sing. its actually pretty interesting on how i learned. IF anybody wants to email me the my email is spyderdemonge@gmail.com

@ "unregistered user"

I bought GH3 some weeks ago and I'm still playing it daily. It's great fun both solo and co-op/vs. I guess it all depends on how long you want to wait to play drums and sing. GH4 will be out in November with more instruments than the guitar so if you're satisfied with just guitar/bass at the moment then I'd go for GH3. It's brilliant :)

Oh, and don't get GH:Aerosmith unless you're a huge fan of theirs. The songs don't justify the price.

for the 360, RockBand guitar works with GH:Aerosmith but not GH3. and thr guitar that came bundled with GH:Aerosmith will work with RockBand

Correction to article:

Yes, the Rock Band controller does NOT work with Guitar Hero 3.
HOWEVER: The GH3 controller works perfectly well with Rock Band. I own both, 'cause I've got mad ghetto cash.

I am looking at getting Rock Band 2 or Guitar Hero for my 8 year old to play on the Wii. Can anyone help me with what one would be the best? Sorry for being so video game stupid, but do they both come with the guitar, drums, and mic.? Is either one of them wire-less. Thanks for helping me out.
