METALLICA: New Album First Listen
- June 6, 2008
|
|
Bob Mulhouse of The Quietus was one of a number of UK-based heavy rock writers who were given a preview of six tracks from the upcoming METALLICA album. The listening session took place on Wednesday (June 4) in London, with representatives from Rock Sound, Kerrang! and Metal Hammer also present. Mulhouse wrote, "It was with some trepidation . . . that I attended the playback of METALLICA's new album at the HQ of Universal, their UK record company. We were permitted to hear six of the 10 tracks which will ultimately appear on the album — which, a rep from the Q-Prime management company informed us, is referred to colloquially by METALLICA as 'nine epics and one song'. The sense of occasion was reinforced by the presence of almost the entire editorial teams of the UK's two biggest metal magazines, glaring at each other over the tea urn. "Right from the off, it's a relief to hear that the utterly awful production of 'St. Anger' is no more. [ Lars] Ulrich has replaced the old dustbin lid from that album with an actual snare drum, and the sound is fresh, clean and resonant (even though the songs are still only rough mixes at this stage). The first song, like the rest of the 'epics,' is between six and eight minutes long and begins with a bass intro from low-ender extraordinaire Robert Trujillo. Moving rapidly from riff to riff, the song bursts with energy and ideas: singer and rhythm guitarist James Hetfield barks 'Luck runs out!' repeatedly and throws in some twisty, semi-progressive riffs which could have been lifted directly from, their last truly good album, 1988's '…And Justice For All'. Guitarist Kirk Hammett, who was banned from soloing on 'St. Anguish' for no adequately explored reason, is on fire, whipping out the melodic, rapid-fire shreds for which he is famous over an extended solo section — almost as if he's making up for lost time. This is METALLICA's best song in ages, perhaps since the 1980s. "The next song has a working title of 'Flamingo' and is going to be the first single. Now, METALLICA's lead singles have been breathtakingly crap since 1995, so it was a relief to hear that 'Flamingo' (as it almost definitely will not be called) is a modernised take on their amazing 1988 song 'One', all balladry at its front end before a speeded-up metalstorm at the back. Hetfield delivers a clean-picked intro which reminded me of the BEACH BOYS (I know… but I only got to hear it once, all right?) before the body of the song, which is basically like 'The Unforgiven' from 1991's 'Black Album'. If you're familiar with the chord progression behind the solo in 'Am I Evil?', the ancient DIAMOND HEAD song which METALLICA made their own, you'll be able to picture the under-solo riffage in this song — all simple, effective major-interval jumps. "However, let us not forget that this is modern METALLICA — and the next two songs are much less fun. The first, which may be called 'We Die Hard' judging by the frequency with which Hetfield barks the phrase, starts boringly but accelerates halfway through and enters slightly proggy territory, all stop-start riff stabs and a clever time signature. The next song is very '…And Justice', a lengthy, unhurried workout which revolves around the line 'Bow down / Sell your soul to me / I will set you free,' itself a 1988 line if I ever heard one. Apart from dexterous soloing from Hammett, it's not great. "So far, we've had two good songs and two dull ones — not a bad track record for new 'TALLICA, believe me. However, track five is tedious, a combination of the aimless riffery of 'St. Anger' and the pointless rock chorusing of 'Load', the album which almost finished METALLICA in 1996. 'Crying, weeping, shedding strife!' sings Hetfield in that slick 'Enter Sandman' manner, over an unthreatening clean midsection which would (and no doubt will) suit VH1 down to the ground. "At this point the Q-Prime geezer asks us if we want to hear more, and fortunately we say yes — because the final song (and indeed, it is 'The Song', the little guy among the nine epics) is great, a genuine slice of thrash metal that starts fast and stays that way. Like a slower, less precise 'Battery' (the opening track of 1986's flawless 'Master Of Puppets' album), the song nips in and out, not outstaying its welcome and proving that on some level, METALLICA still have the necessary vitriol to impress their older fans. OK, it reminded me a bit of 'Dyer's Eve', the last song on 'Justice', which had a kind of 'I suppose we'd better do a fast one for the fans' feel about it — but in 2008, Hetfield and Ulrich delivering any form of thrash metal is not to be sneered at. "We file out of the listening room, not saying much. This album could be good, or it could be mediocre — too much depends on the other four songs to make a call at this point. I try not to agonize about it, but this matters, damn it. It really does." Read more from The Quietus.

If the album turns out to be mediocre then its not such a major catastrophe, as there's plenty of other great bands that have brought out amazing albums & some this year i.e Testament, Moonspell & Death Angel. You do tend to find that people will believe the negative before they even contemplate accepting the positive, lets hope the positive vibes are not a load of hype & Metallica can actually join ranks with some of these valid metal bands, then we'll have a healthy competitive metal re-surgence even on a popular level.

On St. Anger, they tried to imitate System of a Down. Seems like on the new album, they'll try to imitate Mastodon.

Stupid reviewer, well not if you have a "totally methul" point of view, but Load and TBA were amazing albums from a musical point of view.
Looks like the new one is gonna a be a good one :) Atleast I trust this review more than "Kerrang!".

They've moved on, so have we. So has Rick Rubin. We are all clinging onto something that can never return. Even the more recent 'polished' Metallica (Mainly James's singing style) grates on me. It's all so... thought out. The soul seems to be lifeless. I don't think I'll be buying this. Might hear the odd track in a club sometime... but then thats all I ever heard of the Black album.
PS: I saw Cliff Live, 2 weeks before he died.

At least that was the most honest review so far...
Usually it is, "the album was the best thing ever created" or "the album sucks and Metallica sucks".
This guy, upon 1 listen, gave an honest... liked this, this was ok, hated this.. review.
It's a rare thing for any reviewer since they have turned into politicians listening to polls and reading blogs of opinion before they write their review so they can seem "right on" with their opinion. Reviewers suck.

So, I was invited back to hear the last 4 songs, first up was a celine dion inspired ballad called "Napster." A slow haunting number with soaring harmonies by Hetfield and special guest Enya. The next track "We only made 4 good albums" sounds a lot like something off St. Anger, except instead of a trash can, Ulrich can be heard banging away on a tupperware cover. The hollow sound is jarring, but the song gets your attention. The following song "You must be as tall as Lars to get on this ride" moves at a breakneck pace, and by breakneck I mean John Mayer. The last song was puzzling, it's title "cha-ching". This tune is merely live sound of Ulrich, Hammett, and Hetfield counting their money and discussing their favorite "Sex and the City" episodes.

I cant see how Metallica can after steering so far off course can return to their former glory ?! Their recent attempts strike me as musicians that have had their memory erased along with any real competence . Even a small hint of the black album or Justice has to be an insurmountable challenge for these guys ,let alone anything that vaguely resembles the first 3 albums. They have that territory all to them selves with a hungry world dieing for it yet they still cant or don't care to deliver what they are most famous for.

This guy is a jackass. "Guitarist Kirk Hammett, who was banned from soloing on 'St. Anguish' for no adequately explored reason... "
He wasn't banned from it. They just didn't write songs around solos and ultimately solos didn't fit into the album. They actually recorded solos on some songs for St. Anger but decided against using them. I love how people take cheap shots.

Heard it ll before...they said St Anger sounded ok at first listen as well....
Whats the story with the new Testament? Ive got it, its OK at best, nothing special, sounds just like they did in the 80s really...it seems to me that alot of kids out there dont realise that these bands havent really changed since the 80s, they went away for a while and now they all came back. It just goes to show what a dire state Metal is in when we get excited over new albums by bands like Testament, Death Angel, Exodus and this new Metallica...all bands that have been around for 20 plus years...where is the good new YOUNG up and coming bands?
Trivium sounds like Metallica in the 80s, so dont tell me they are up and coming, theyre not doing anything new.

after reading this review of new tallica, it seems to be the most honest of all the ones so far of the people who heard it.... Tallica basically lost their way a few years back.... Think lars should take up tennis again..... I doubt this album will top new Testament, Warbringer, or Zimmers hole for that matter.... Sad to say, Metallica is a dying horse..... possibly the best metal album this year. Although I think most people just want this album to be okay to sort of prove that Metallica aren't in the shit...
I basically have the same hopes for this album as I did for the simpsons movie last year... in that case though, i sort of just wanted to see a good episode of the simpsons, and i got that plus more...
though from what im hearing, we might have an album that will make up for St Anger with ease. if they really wanna please their fans some more, they can re-record some parts to st anger, remix it and put it out as a "remastered version"
not sure if anyone realises this, but that album had some pretty good songs... when played live, those songs sound pretty good, especially when the solos were added in.... but the mixing and lars killed the album

Good call man. Those are probably my 3 favorite releases so far in 2008.
- Zimmers Hole - "While You Were Shouting at the Devil..." - Warbringer - "War Without End" - Testament - "The Formation of Damnation"
The sad reality is, Metallica's new record will not even come close to touching the passion & aggression of these albums.

One quick note, the NYC guy on here just constantly types posts that are lame and sound really stupid. I dont who this guy is and dont care but you are a moron. Now....I was reading reviews the other day on Justice for All and several ripped it to shreds. One said the kick drums sound like clicks rather then drums, the guitar sound thin and tingy and no bass. I had a number of friends that cried Metallica sold out when Justice came out. For you younger fans, since Ride the Lightning Metallica has been called sellouts. Load and Reload were all one album released twice. If you put Load and Reload together as it was intended then it is a great risk they took and had some great music.

...not disingenious, just speaking the truth about a band that wasn't all that great to begin with. I am coming at this from a fresh persepctive. I have listened to the new Testament album over and over again trying to find anything remotely interesting about it. Production is fine and the musicianship is capable. But it's completely boring and uninspired therefore, I say the album sucks. Definitely not worth a 9 and most certainly not one of the best metal albums of the year.

Okay, so you admit the production is fine and the musicianship is capable, fair enough. But to say its "boring and uninspired" is your point of view and not a fact held by most. Where as Metallica's mediocre output these last couple decades is a view held by a vast majority, including myself, you only need read the lion's share of posts here. Though I know there is the odd poster who will claim Load, Reload or St. Anger to be among the greatest they ever heard.
You say Testament sucks, I say Metallica sucks, end of story.

You are definitely entitled to your opinion but don't compare Metallica of the last 20 years with Testament. Load, Reload, and St Anguish going against Demonic, the Gathering, and FOD???? Come on man.....are you seriously saying that those testament albums are boring? uninspired? Metallica have gone through a finger drill on every album since the black one. The new Testament is a great ride from start to finish. Was St Anger? Was Reload??

You know, you guys are real pieces of shit, you know that? You guys talk all this shit about Metallica because yo hear the music but you're not listening. If you guys hate Metallica so much why the hell are you reading the news about the new album. Theres nothing wrong with the St. Anger album, if you hear it close, you'll see that Metallica really came up with some good work, especially the lyrics. You're not a fan at all if you say "I like this but not this" because all the other albums Ride the Lightning and so forth is all Metallica. Metallica is Metallica. The older you get the more you evolve. You're taking all this too seriously, you're supposed to have a good time listening to music and not talking some mean shit about it. I can't wait for the new album and I and all the real fans already know that it's going to be good. To Metallica: "Thank you for everything. Keep playing and we'll keep listening."

Who needs Metallica nowadays when you have such great bands as Ensiferum, Sabaton, Norther, Wintersun, Korpiklaani, and a lot of other greatness from Europe...
dont really care if this album is going to be good or not

The culture of metal (and the music industry) has changed considerably in the relatively short time since "St. Anger" came out in 2003.
Newer metal bands are shortchanged on mainstream exposure (but counterargument: Pantera didn't need it). Metal is more aggressive as a whole.
More bands are relying on double-pedal drums and two guitarists. Singers either are less intelligible or more melodic and progressive.
In short, Metallica's new album will gauge the health of current metal. A return to form will show it still has life. But if it plods along, it takes the rest of the bands with it.

It sounds AWESOME... but it's only like a fraction of a fraction of the album...
So I'm still not too optimistic....

Seriously does anyone listen to anything besides metal? Saying Metallica was dead after justice is the dumbest statement anyone could ever make. Metal sucks bigtime. All these metal bands suck. Metallica knew if they kept playing speed metal they wouldnt sell shit like all the other loser metal bands. Get your head out of your ass and listen to other music. Metallica sells more albums than all of them could ever dream of and Load is a great album but its not metal. Ok we get the point you fucking iditots.
