KISS Blasts Radiohead Over Digi Music

Posted by Frank Meyer - Wednesday, June 18, 2008 9:48 AM

Hey, much-respected Thom Yorke of Radiohead? Guess what? For all your forward thinking, rock credibility…. Gene Simmons of KISS thinks you’re a jerk!!!

Or something to that effect…

Yes, the outspoken, anti-file-sharing bassists aimed his musket at the British rockers for giving fans the choice to download last year's album In Rainbows for free or pay an amount of their choosing, He says their decision is contributing to the demise of the record industry and KISS would never follow suit.

"The record industry is dead, said the star of reality TV’s School of Rock. “It's six feet underground and unfortunately the fans have done this. They've decided to download and file share. There is no record industry around so we're going to wait until everybody settles down and becomes civilized. As soon as the record industry pops its head up we'll record new material."

And with that, Simmons put on the finishing touches of his demon makeup, spit blood, flapped his wings and flew into the rafters to descend on a half-full arena of fans to sing “God of Thunder” for the 10,000th time. Ahhhhh, it’s good to be the king…..

Oh noes....

Posted by elementair - Wednesday, June 18, 2008 9:53 AM
Does anyone really care what some has been rocker thinks? Its called making money from tours ass, not cd sales. You are already rich Gene.

Posted by Slaytanic40oz - Wednesday, June 18, 2008 9:56 AM
Well KISS are the masters of the farewell tour. They do one like every 20min, which is slightly more often than Black Sabbath.

Posted by Smartguy81 - Wednesday, June 18, 2008 9:58 AM
Seventies suck band anyway. Record industry killed itself Gene! Should have found a way to make money off of Napster.

Posted by tr00p3r - Wednesday, June 18, 2008 9:59 AM
i guess is in the music business for the $$$$ greedy bastard. kiss has sold out so many times

Posted by roue_molle - Wednesday, June 18, 2008 10:00 AM
That's just another old-timer band joining the RAA (Retarded Artists Alliance).

Posted by migstar - Wednesday, June 18, 2008 10:02 AM
That pretty stale thinking, and coming from a band thats as shallow and pop-ish as they come, it's not suprise. Thom Yorke seems to be adapting and progressively thinking, record labels who care more about money and less about the art of music had this coming.

Gene Simmons is such a tool.

Posted by hetman - Wednesday, June 18, 2008 10:04 AM
WTF seriously how much money has kiss made by selling toys, magazines, movies, cartoons, even video games, coffins, underware, masks, toothbrushes, toothpaste, business card holders, water bottles, coffe mugs, chains necklaces, clothing, guitars, shoes, bikes, etc. You would think they would know that you really do not need record sales to become rich.

Posted by Tasomo - Wednesday, June 18, 2008 10:07 AM
KISS is still around?

Oh wait, that's right...Simmons is doing reality TV now. Yeah, that puts his credibility somewhere around shower mold.

Posted by Slaytanic40oz - Wednesday, June 18, 2008 10:10 AM
@ hetman: don't forget they have their own coffee shops too

Posted by slimmer - Wednesday, June 18, 2008 10:12 AM
Kiss = shower mold.

For all you wanna be rockers, dont ever play music for free and see where that gets you.

Posted by _tinkertrain_ - Wednesday, June 18, 2008 10:15 AM
i'm not the biggest Radiohead fan, but i respect what they did with their latest album. It shows they are in the business for the music, not the money

Gene, and KISS for that matter, are nothing but money grubbing wh*res. KISS is more into merchandise sales and royalties than they are into music

When disco was the biggest thing in music, what KISS do, they released a disco album. KISS is the worse type of band. All they see are dollar signs. BUY our music. BUY our action figures. BUY our outrageously stupid coffin. We're already rich, so why cant we just have a few more million to add to the vault

I hope that douche doesn't make another record, the world is better off w/o any more of his trash. Simmons is a tool and shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as Yorke

Posted by truzoo - Wednesday, June 18, 2008 11:55 AM
It's been said before, but it bears saying again: Gene Simmons is a massive turd.

Posted by digiduman23 - Wednesday, June 18, 2008 11:58 AM
Kiss my (insert body part here) Gene Simmons!

Posted by doom56 - Wednesday, June 18, 2008 12:30 PM
Well if Gene Simmons and KISS can't make money in the record industry, they should try the vacuum cleaner business considering they suck almost almost as much as they blow.

crybaby

KISS isn't going to make another record?

Thank you, God.

Posted by johhnymayhem - Wednesday, June 18, 2008 1:47 PM
I've never heard a stronger argument to increase worldwide piracy!

NERD ASSEMBLE! TO THE COMPUTERS!

Posted by SooperHiro - Wednesday, June 18, 2008 1:50 PM
If they wait too long for the record industry to reappear their fan base will have all died.... Hell they prob won't even make it that long.

Posted by twisted_method_x - Wednesday, June 18, 2008 1:58 PM
@_tinkertrain_
well to me it makes them look like pretentious asses

@every1
yes yes we all know how u feel about KISS but they did have like one of the biggest followings EVER... i mean we've all seen Detroit Rock City

Posted by MorganL4 - Wednesday, June 18, 2008 3:43 PM
migstar,

I hate to break it to you but KISS is anything but pop

in the 70's KISS concerts were constantly picketed by crazed right wing christains however Elton John Concerts had no chirstian rights groups what so ever ( granted he hadnt come out of the closet yet, but still.....)

All this really means is that Radiohead and kiss will never do a concert together and kiss will never put out a new album, surprise surprise, they havnt done a new album since 1998 and no one has been expecting any new material for years, btw I am a member of the kiss army

Posted by plasticgiantcatbear - Wednesday, June 18, 2008 4:09 PM
KISS isn't even relevant anymore. So they had some catchy tunes and a gimmick years ago that earned them extreme success. They don't have the fan base they used to, and frankly, the majority of people wont give a damn if they never released any new material.

Posted by ahorriblemess - Wednesday, June 18, 2008 4:36 PM
Oh boo hoo... Kiss is spent, who gives a crap?

Posted by Calaban007 - Wednesday, June 18, 2008 7:48 PM
You go Gene....

to hell, greedy bast@rd.

Posted by RottenRonnie - Wednesday, June 18, 2008 8:29 PM
You guys are morons! This isn't JUST about Kiss you idiots! Don't you understand that Gene is right? Forget that he is a rich rock star from a band you all hate. WHO CARES! You need to look at the bigger picture. File sharing IS destroying the music business, and probably the movie business. Radiohead & NIN are doing digi packs now because everyone is stealing. Those guys are going with the whole "if you can't beat them, join them" attitude, which IMO is a dumb move. And pirating music is just that, it's PIRATING! Yeah the bands make their money from touring, but the RECORD COMPANIES make it from CD sales which helps keep the artists in business (and creates new artists). If the record companies don't make sales, it's bye bye. So quit being a bunch of little douche bags, go out and actually BUY the CDs you pirate and HELP support the record companies and the bands. If I were a music artist, I would want you to buy my records too, I wouldn't want you to steal them. You friggin A holes.

Posted by jrsvenom - Wednesday, June 18, 2008 8:39 PM
@ RottenRonnie
and if i were a music artist id want you to see me in concert. F # C K the record companies they dont give a good god damn about us, they just want our money. Now that im done w/ that im goin to go download KISS songs now ;)

Posted by RottenRonnie - Wednesday, June 18, 2008 8:56 PM
jrsvenom - I agree with you, I would want to see my fans at my concerts too. I'm not debating that. I'm just saying don't steal. If you wanna download KISS songs for free, fine, go for it. I can't stop you. But why not go out and buy the actual CD? Record companies are important to most artists, wether you choose to believe that or not. Besides, with a CD you get cool things like artwork, lyrics, pictures, an actual CD ... etc.

Posted by plasticgiantcatbear - Wednesday, June 18, 2008 10:40 PM
@RottenRonnie

So let's pretend that the record industry died off. Does that mean there will be no new artists? Um, I don't think so. IMO, the fat cats in the industry have been made virtually obsolete. Instead of embracing file-sharing, they shunned it, and THAT was a bad move.

It's sure as hell going to get a whole lot tougher for new bands without the coffers of the record labels and I think bands like Radiohead might take their success for granted, but something new will spring up and take its place. Perhaps it will mean less mass production of mediocre music and more of the raw and utter talent that used to be.

Posted by PyreFlame - Wednesday, June 18, 2008 10:51 PM
Wow there are alot of immature kids on this site. Maybe you should get some sense of morality and actually support your bands instead of just getting it the wrong way. You all know its not the right thing to do but you download anyway because its free. All people seem to think is that bands have to make money off of touring. Did you stop to think of the millions of people that live nowhere near where the band is playing and can't afford to get there in the first place? What do bands generally want when they start out? A record deal. Imagine that. Who could've seen that the bands don't want a "lets not get anything out of our music" deal. Are the record companies corrupt? Of course. But its a business like any other. Honestly you all need to grow up already

Posted by changbang - Wednesday, June 18, 2008 10:58 PM
according to that quote, it doesnt seem like he was commenting on radiohead directly

Posted by kryptoid - Wednesday, June 18, 2008 11:47 PM
@PyreFlame

When bands start out they first of all just want fans. To be on stage and play and have some connection to those watching. A record deal is the ultimate bonus, but no one starts a band thinking "i'm only doing this for a record deal". Most think "I wanna be cool, I wanna get women, I wanna get a message out". As far people not having money to go to concerts, how do they have money to buy an album? 20 bucks for an album or 40 for a ticket....i would rather save for the ticket. If the concert is too far your outta luck. Hell if your really strapped for cash just listen to the radio. Music is an art and art is NEVER ment to make money.

Posted by Cattac - Wednesday, June 18, 2008 11:57 PM
I'm willing to bet legal music download services are hurting the record labels more than piracy. People aren't paying $10-15 for the 2 or 3 songs they want off a CD anymore. They can completely eliminate piracy and they'll still lose a lot of money compared to the pre-mp3 era.

Posted by cantonkid - Thursday, June 19, 2008 1:37 AM
a 1970s mindset, from a guy who is fast apporaching his 70s.

Change is inevitable. New bands are adapting to it, using the technology of a new generation.

Keep living in the world of platform shoes Mr. S.

Posted by elementair - Thursday, June 19, 2008 1:38 AM
At least Radiohead lyrically speaking has something of importance to say , both politically and socially. WTF has KIss ever sung about that was significant. Getting messed up and sleeping with various woman?

Posted by mercisan - Thursday, June 19, 2008 2:34 AM
@RottenRonnie

I agree that we should pay for the music because it costs money to produce it. Artists have to make a living too. However, it pisses me off when artists react like this. What is it to Mr. Simmons what Radiohead do with their music? Radiohead is doing what is best for them and the fans at the time. It's smart on their part. They are reducing costs and reaching a much broader audience. Even people who didn't care about them before are likely to download the album, and chances are they'll like some of it. Fans get the benefit of paying only for what they like.
