1349/Goatwhore : Jaxx Nightclub - Washington, D.C.
www.braingell.com --

For the second time in a month Goatwhore came to the Washington, D.C. area and this time they were in support of 1349. While I personally think that Goatwhore should have been the headliner on this tour, 1349's fans showed up and gave them the headliner support.

Considering the fact that I just saw Goatwhore a few weeks ago there really isn't much for me to report that is different than the last time. If you would like to read the review I did of Goatwhore a few weeks ago you can find it here (God Forbid/Goatwhore/Mnemic). One thing that was different this time around was that 1349 was sharing the drum riser, which opened up the stage for GW. The singer and band had lots more room to roam and their vocalist used every inch of it. The funniest comment of the night's events came when someone in the crowd yelled, "Play a Christain song!", in which the GW singer replied, "A Christain song? Ok, we'll play some Trivium, which means we should play a Metallica song.". Of course they didn't but the crowd laughed and hooted at the comment. Anyway, I was lucky enough to get a few minutes with the GW singer and he was one of the nicest and quietest frontmen I have ever met. To my great suprise he also seemed shy as hell. I found it amusing to think that being on a stage transfoms him into a monster. As I scored GW last time, 9 out of 10. I'm always thrilled to see these guys.

To finish up the night after much delay, 1349 finally took the stage. Their gig started out with some type of satanic incantation intro. The club was fogged to death, which drives me nuts because taking photos with all that fog is a serious pain in the ass. The band was decked out in the traditional black metal warpaint and the guys were dressed in tattered black garb, spikes, and nails. Considering that band was so into their image, I found it somewhat odd that they decided to hardly use any front lighting. Why go through all the trouble of dolling yourself up if you aren't going to show what you look like? This is the first band I have ever seen that strategicly positioned themselves around the stage. It was if each member had a forcefield around them because they were always arranged perfectly around the space. You hardly ever saw two band members standing within five feet of eachother. Much of the show seemed to be scripted as far as positioning and group headbanging.

While they were a blastbeat styled band, the vocals reminded me a lot of the singer from Possessed. A very bizzare thing I noticed was that between songs the bass player would fill the space with slow dirges all by himself. Not once did the singer ever talk between songs. Once the music began he might say something very limited, but overall there was no vocal interaction with the crowd. The overall feel of the music was traditional. It reminded me a lot of the metal that went underground in the 80's. I really wish I could have heard the music, but the mix was horrible and the volume was way too loud which just made the mix sound muddier. As far as I could tell there wasn't a single solo in any song, which drives me fuckin' batty. A few times during the show they even lost sound, which from what I was told was because they were using a digital mixing board and the engineer did something he wasn't supposed to do. When the show came to a close, the speakers blared out some digital sample that sounded like the start to an encore song and the crowd stood there and waited for a few minutes. Finally the audio died down and the house music came up. The crowd wanted an encore and yelled and groaned for it, but the band left 'em hanging. That was a shitty way to end the show. I'm sure anyone who was there would agree. In the end the band was good at portraying their image and for the most part the crowd seemed pleased to see them, but due to bad sound, no interaction, and a shitty encore ruse, I am scoring these guys as 6 out of 10. They just didn't seem to give a shit about their fans.

I am very sad to report that spring break is upon the D.C. metal scene and all the kids in the area go away for vacations, which means that I don't have a single fuckin' show to attend for about a month. In my next report I hope to give you the scoop on the Novembers Doom show April 25th!. Stay tuned.

BY THE WAY! I have a note to send out from a Jaxx employee. His name is Bear and he's on the security team. He would like me to tell all of you ladies that he is single and he is looking. SO GIVE THE BEAR SOME LOVE!
