Opera mixed with metal? While I had heard it before, I can't say that I had ever seen it done live, so I figured I would shoot on down to Jaxx to get a little taste of it.
Because I had decided to go on the spur of the moment, I had already missed all but two songs my Leave's Eyes. The band were dressed in a fancy manner, compared to most bands that I see at Jaxx and good lord was the lead female singer gorgeous. There was a dude singing too. I really didn't get enough face time to see if I liked their music or not, but they were different enough that I wished I had gotten to see some more of them. The music was clean and powerful, but not overly technical. The vocals were the draw here. Because of my short stint seeing them I couldn't really rate them, but I will have the opportunity to give a full review of them when they return to Jaxx with King Diamond and Kreator in February.
Up next was Kamelot. The house was packed and the show was sold out. It was uncomfortably crammed full of people and it had to be at least a gazillion degrees in the club. The band had outfitted the stage with lots of banners, truss, computerized lights, and the coolest drumset and riser that I have seen at Jaxx this year. Another part of the scenery was a beautiful woman who they placed at a back corner of the stage, who would sing the female parts. I don't think she was an official band member and she pretty much stood on the X they gave her on the floor and didn't move except to leave the stage when she wasn't needed. The band overall reminded me of what Queensryche used to be. It was very progressive and singy, but was a little less inventive. The singer had been billed as "opera-trained" or something, and while he could sing great and in tune, he sure didn't have the punch that is required of opera singers. I didn't really notice anything out of the ordinary about the other bands members except they seemed to stand out of the bright lights. After about 30 minutes I figured I had seen "what their angle was" and it was just too damn hot for me to stay another minute, so I split. In the end, if you like operatic-proggy type stuff, you might dig this band. I guess a 7 out of 10 rating is fair.
In my next report I hope to give you the scoop on the Devildriver show on 8/23 ! Stay tuned.
