If you like death metal and you also like going to your local Renaissance Festival, seeing Finntroll live might be just what you are looking for.
A horde of about 350 Dungeons and Dragons metalheads showed up at Jaxx for a rare night of folk styled death metal. They jigged and pranced, they banged and danced. For how nasty death metal fans can be, these were probably the happiest and most frantic people I have seen at Jaxx this year. Hell, even thought I only knew a few song by these dudes, I couldn't help but bob my head along the entire time. I am not a huge fan of the band when it comes to cuts from their CD's, but live the music seems so much more... more... Well, I don't really know. Just more.
One thing that bummed me out was that I was expecting to see all of their Celtic lutes and flutes being played live on stage, but it turns out that they have a keyboard player who takes care of all that stuff. Bummer. The bands faces were painted in a mellow "Braveheart" style, but for the most part you couldn't see them because they hid behind their hair. The whirlwinding singer had an awesome growl and was the only dude in the band who really moved around. The other dudes stuck to their European metal script and really never moved out of their pre-defined, invisible, 3 foot square boxes. Their robotic drummer looked to be absolutely bored to tears.
Overall the song Trollhammaren summed up the atmosphere with a crazy, violent pit... And oddly the pit was all smiles and giggles. So strange. This show was a medieval party of clapping peasants and the only thing that was missing was a merch booth that featured grog and giant turkey drumsticks. It was a fun show and Finntroll really sounded great. 8 out of 10.
In my next report I hope to give you the scoop on the Overkill show on 10/4 ! Stay tuned.
