Woe Of Tyrants – Threnody
Our buddies in WOE OF TYRANTS (a.k.a. Bro Of Tyrants) are back with their latest release, Threnody, and are back at their best. I think I can honestly say WOE OF TYRANTS has earned the most improved band of the year so far – this is almost like a new WOE OF TYRANTS. Now don’t get me wrong, because I loved Kingdom Of Might, but Threnody is all the shred you previously loved about the band, now only leagues better! Threnody is a much darker, heavier, and more aggressive album, and the shred factor has indeed risen to ten fold. Vocalist Chris Catanazaro almost seems to take new life, as he’s really stepped his vocal authority up a notch. But let me tell you, it’s the guitar counter attacks from guitarists Nick Dozer and Matt Kincaid that make this album scream metal as fuck! Whether WOE OF TYRANTS is playing technical, downright extreme, thrashing away, or laying down the classic metal law, these guys are seriously some talented shredders who definitely know the game!
“Creatures Of The Mire” comes right out of the gates with ferocious guitars and pounding distortion. Their transitions are pretty righteous, switching from tremolo picking to death metal riffing, guitar wizardry to straight up brutality – it seems to come so natural. “Tempting The Wretched” really shows how much WOE OF TYRANTS songwriting has improved. Only 4 songs deep into Threnody and you already know you are in for one wild ride! This song perfectly showcases how much darker the band has gotten, and really shows WOE OF TYRANTS finding their sound. The band shreds all over this track, and “Tempting The Wretched” is where I see the band at their strongest. “Bloodsmear” shows the band bringing a brutal assault with quite an authority. This song doesn’t slow down once, and this is where I see the band unleashing the most power, and not to forget all the excellent guitar riffs in the mix, and even some progressive elements – at [2:06], that sweeping backed by brutality completely destroys all in sight! Boy do those guitar harmonies raise the horns.
Threnody is one of the best metal releases I’ve heard so far this year. The level of focus and dedication to their craft is incredible, and you can damn sure tell they are proud of the final outcome. The band is on tour right now with Overkill, Vader, God Dethroned, Warbringer, and Evile, so if you get a chance, make sure you check them out live. They put on one hell of an energetic show full of headbanging. I’m stoked to hear what’s next, but first and foremost, thanks for keeping real metal alive, guys!
